Horace Tapscott et Nimbus : Discographie du label
Le label Nimbus fut fondé en 1978 à Los Angeles par Tom Albach afin d’enregistrer la musique du Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, d’Horace Tapscott et des membres de l’Ark (Adele Sebastian, Roberto Miranda, Nate Morgan, Dadisi Komolafe…). Il compte à ce jour 44 références.
L'histoire et l’itinéraire du label peuvent se résumer en quelques mots.
- De 1978 à 1985, Nimbus enregistre essentiellement des musiciens membres de l’U.G.M.A.A. (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension) fondée en 1961 par Horace Tapscott.
- En 1985, Tom Albach quitte Los Angeles pour s’installer en Europe à Amsterdam. Là, il enregistre des artistes européens (Ernst Reijseger, Daniele D’Agaro…) ou installés aux Pays-Bas (Curtis Clark, Sean Bergin…) et ce jusqu’à son retour aux Etats-Unis dans les années 90.
La discographie du label se divise donc en deux périodes qui se "chevauchent" : Los Angeles de 1978 à 1987 et Amsterdam de 1984 à 1993.
Aujourd’hui, Tom Albach réédite les vinyles épuisés et publie des enregistrements inédits (la série des Tapscott Sessions est toujours en cours…).
J’ai pris le parti de présenter cette discographie en quatre "étapes" :
La première, Los Angeles de 1980 à 1987, correspondant aux enregistrements des membres de l’U.G.M.A.A. excepté ceux du Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra et d’Horace Tapscott qui ont déjà été détaillés précédemment.
La deuxième étape etant donc Amsterdam de 1984 à 1993.
Les troisième et quatrième étapes, qui chronologiquement auraient méritées d’apparaître en premier et qui sont donc ici en rappel de mon précédent article, correspondent donc aux enregistrements du Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (1978-1979) et d’Horace Tapscott (1980-1984).
